Create two direct mail pieces for your campaign. To help with the look of a typical direct mail piece, locate a recent or current example from a campaign in your area. Feel free to use your own creativity to create an eye-catching piece that connects and resonates with voters. The two pieces should target two different segments of the electorate.

Create a video ad for your campaign. Who is the target audience? How does it differ from the mail pieces you created? [For these first two exercises, remember to focus on your campaign message and the information you created as part of your SWOT analysis and the development of the message box. As a journalist, you have just seen the mail pieces and television ad prepared by the campaign. Write a critique of the ads for your online newspaper column or blog. Did the advertisements contain relevant information? Did they contain attacks? Did they use truthful information? This exercise is called an “ad watch.” For more information about these kinds of stories, conduct an Internet search for ad watches and look for news stories from television networks or newspapers.
